Vietnam’s government has officially approved SpaceX to launch its Starlink satellite internet service within the country, according to a state media report released on a Saturday. The decision marks a significant step in expanding connectivity options for the nation.
The report detailed that the Ministry of Science and Technology granted a license to Starlink’s local unit, permitting it to provide both fixed and mobile satellite internet services. The license also includes approval for the use of necessary radio frequencies and equipment.
This formal approval follows a trial period that began last year, when the government first agreed to let SpaceX test its service. However, it remains unclear exactly when Starlink will become available to consumers in Vietnam.
The timing of the announcement is notable, as it comes just ahead of an expected visit by Vietnam’s top leader to the United States. The leader is scheduled to attend the inaugural meeting of a U.S. presidential initiative focused on global peace, though the trip has not been formally announced.
Separately, this development occurs as Vietnam and the U.S. continue to negotiate a trade agreement. Talks have been ongoing since a major financial institution imposed significant tariffs on Vietnamese goods, with the most recent round of discussions having taken place earlier in the month without a final agreement being announced.
