The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is set to implement significant job cuts, with the aim of addressing budget pressures totaling approximately C$125 million ($92.32 million) for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, according to the broadcaster.
CBC and Radio-Canada, its French-language counterpart, will each see a reduction of about 250 jobs. The remaining cuts will be distributed across the technology and infrastructure divisions. Additionally, approximately 200 presently vacant positions are slated for elimination.
In response to the financial challenges, CBC announced adjustments to its English and French programming budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. This includes a reduction of about C$40 million in independent production commissions and program acquisitions.
Earlier in the year, the broadcaster had already initiated discretionary cost reductions amounting to over C$25 million. These measures encompassed areas such as travel, sponsorships, marketing, and the postponement of technology initiatives.
