Ford is Entering a New EV Era

Ford is charting a new course for its electric vehicle future, shifting its focus from larger, more expensive models to more affordable and efficient ones. After betting heavily on batteries and big electric SUVs and trucks—a market that failed to materialize as expected—the automaker is now prioritizing simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

The core of this new strategy involves designing vehicles with fewer parts, simpler electrical systems, and more efficient manufacturing processes, such as unicasting. A major emphasis is also being placed on improved aerodynamics. Reducing drag means the vehicles use less energy, which in turn allows for a smaller, lighter battery pack without sacrificing driving range.

To further cut costs, Ford plans to use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are cheaper and more durable than other types, making them well-suited for high-use vehicles. The first product to emerge from this new platform will be a mid-sized electric pickup truck.

The move toward affordability addresses a key hurdle for many potential buyers: price. The used EV market has shown a significant jump in sales as prices dip below the $30,000 mark, proving there is strong demand for more budget-friendly electric options. While some might expect Ford to lead with a popular mid-sized SUV, the company is leaning into its established strength in the pickup truck segment.

At an anticipated price point around $30,000, this new Ford pickup will enter a competitive landscape. It will go up against base models of popular new EVs, like the Tesla Model 3, as well as upcoming releases from other automakers. Its most direct rival in the electric pickup category is expected to be a modular truck from a new automotive startup, which is also slated to start around $35,000. Ultimately, Ford’s big bet is that the future of electric vehicles lies in making them accessible to a much wider audience.
