Lutnick Hangs On After Epstein Visit Revelation, Tariff Turmoil

Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary, has so far defied predictions of his ouster, but his appearance in the recently released Jeffrey Epstein files has placed him in a difficult position. The situation was highlighted during a recent Senate hearing where the billionaire former CEO was pressed to explain a 2012 trip he took to the disgraced financier’s private island. This visit occurred years after Epstein’s conviction for procuring minors for prostitution and contradicts Lutnick’s previous claims that he had no contact with him.

Before the panel, Lutnick repeatedly insisted he “barely had anything to do” with Epstein. He emphasized that his wife, four children, and nannies accompanied him on the island visit, stating, “We had lunch on the island, that is true, for an hour, and we left with all of my children… To suggest there was anything untoward about that in 2012, I don’t recall why we did it, but we did.” However, one senator pointedly remarked, “this guy was a convicted sex offender and obviously not a great place for kids and nannies.”

The scrutiny may not be over. The chairman of the House Oversight Committee has suggested Lutnick could be called to testify as part of the chamber’s broader Epstein investigation. This development comes as Lutnick also contends with the fallout from a Supreme Court ruling that struck down a significant portion of the previous administration’s tariff agenda.

For now, Lutnick does not appear to be in immediate danger of losing his job. The current president has shown no interest in punishing his old friend, telling reporters, “Howard would go in and do whatever he has to say. He’s an innocent guy, doing a good job.” A White House spokesman confirmed that the president “maintains complete confidence in Secretary Lutnick,” praising his role in securing historic trade deals and major investment agreements.

Despite this support, the episode underscores the pressure on Lutnick as he works to implement trade agreements finalized last year. A former administration official noted the president’s support but questioned the explanation for the island visit, wondering if such associations could eventually become a liability. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Lutnick listed the secretary’s accomplishments, including initiatives to incentivize pharmaceutical reshoring and a visa program for wealthy foreign investors, stating he remains “relentlessly focused on delivering for the American people.”
