McDonald's is all in on its Extra Value Meals, global CFO says

McDonald’s has reported strong fourth-quarter results, revealing growth in both U.S. and global sales while exceeding earnings and revenue expectations. A key topic of discussion following the report was the fast-food giant’s renewed focus on affordability, particularly the reintroduction of its Extra Value Meals.

The company’s global chief financial officer highlighted three key factors behind the quarter’s success: strong performance across all operating segments, an increase in global customer visits, and significant progress on value platforms that are resonating with consumers. He described a strategy of “going three for three,” which involves combining great value, exciting new menu items, and powerful marketing.

The reintroduction of the Extra Value Meals in September, offering about a 15% discount on combo meals, was a direct response to customer feedback. “Consumers said, ‘you guys are doing a great job… but we’re still looking for more value and affordability across your core menu,'” the CFO explained. The initiative was launched with support from about 98% of U.S. franchisees.

According to the company, the strategy is already showing positive results. Key success metrics included growing their share of lower-income consumers, which was achieved in the fourth quarter, and improving customer perceptions of the chain’s value and affordability. The CFO firmly stated that the company is committed to leading on value, citing its size, scale, and financial strength as reasons it can make the necessary investments to meet customer needs.

He also noted that despite these investments, the average annual cash flow for U.S. franchise operators increased, demonstrating that the company can balance customer affordability with strong financial performance for its business owners.
