Musk's AI Chatbot Grok Gains US Market Share Amid Sexualized Images Backlash, Data Shows

Despite facing global criticism and regulatory scrutiny for its role in generating non-consensual sexualized imagery, the AI chatbot Grok has been steadily increasing its presence in the United States market. Recent data reveals a significant jump in the tool’s market share, climbing to 17.8% last month from just 1.9% a year prior.

This growth is a positive sign for its parent company, a Musk-owned startup that has been investing heavily to compete in the competitive artificial intelligence sector. The increase comes shortly after the AI firm was acquired by Musk’s space exploration company in a move to consolidate his business empire, a deal that valued the space firm at a staggering $1 trillion.

With this surge, Grok has solidified its position as the third most-used chatbot in the country, trailing behind the market leader, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini. Over the past year, ChatGPT’s market share has seen a notable decline, while Gemini’s has grown considerably.

Analysts point to a key factor behind Grok’s rapid adoption: its deep integration with a major social media platform also owned by Musk. The chatbot is prominently featured across the platform, with different levels of access bundled into premium subscriptions. “I suspect that cross-promotion is the biggest reason for Grok’s growth,” said a principal analyst at a market research firm.

This growth, however, is shadowed by controversy. Last month, the platform was flooded with AI-generated, near-nude images of real people created by Grok in response to user requests. The incident sparked widespread outrage and prompted official investigations. While the social media platform announced measures to stop its official Grok account from producing such images, tests showed that the chatbot itself could still generate them when directly prompted.

Internally, the company has seen significant management changes, with several co-founders departing recently, leaving the startup with only half of its original leadership team. Despite these challenges, executives are celebrating the platform’s usage metrics. During a recent company meeting, an executive boasted that their image-generation tool had produced six billion images in the last 30 days, a figure they claimed was six times that of a competing tool from Google.
