The discussion highlights a fundamental question: is there even a need for such a product? After all, human workers already perform the tasks these robots are intended for. Furthermore, the idea of a humanoid robot constantly recording and following people around in their homes raises significant privacy concerns that many are uncomfortable with.

While the concept of a perfect robot that makes breakfast and handles chores is appealing, the technology is incredibly difficult to master. Recent demonstrations show a robot that “can barely walk pretty good,” suggesting we are a long way from a machine that functions like a human.

Proponents point to a potentially massive market, with some estimates projecting growth from $2.9 billion in 2025 to over $15 billion by 2030. The investment thesis is compelling to some; if these robots can be sold for a significant profit, they could eventually generate more income than Tesla’s core electric vehicle business. One shareholder speculated that selling one million robots could yield $20 billion in profit, a figure that eclipses the company’s best annual car profits.

However, this optimistic outlook is met with strong skepticism. Critics argue that shifting focus from a multi-billion dollar EV business to a speculative robotics venture is a risky move, especially as the EV market faces challenges. The idea of selling a million sophisticated robots in just a few years is dismissed as a fantasy, detached from manufacturing and supply chain realities.

A major practical hurdle was also identified: the advanced memory chips required to power these robots’ “brains” are not yet available at the necessary scale. The underlying technology simply isn’t ready to support mass production. For now, the vision of a functional humanoid robot in every home remains a distant goal.
