US Software Stocks Climb as Anthropic Announcement Sparks Relief Rally

Shares of U.S. software companies climbed on Tuesday, leading a rebound in a sector that had been hammered by fears about the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence. The rally was sparked by an announcement from an AI startup regarding new partnerships.

The startup said it was developing new tools, so-called “plug-ins,” with its partners designed to help with tasks in fields like investment banking, wealth management, and human resources. These tools could assist with deal reviews, portfolio analysis, and ensuring new-hire materials reflect a brand’s tone and policies.

Shares of the named partners climbed significantly, and broader market indicators also rose. The S&P 500 software and services index rose 1.4%, while a major software-focused ETF jumped 2.4%. This positive movement came after the software index hit a 10-month low just a day earlier. That drop followed a research report outlining a scenario where widespread AI-driven layoffs could push unemployment higher by 2028.

“Software stocks are massively oversold. So any incremental news we get about more disruptions is reaching a point where we have to ask how much bad news is already priced in,” said one market strategist. He added, “Some of this disruption is not imminent, and a lot of it is probably years out yet. The market’s telling us that now.”

A week-long selloff earlier this month, dubbed ‘Software-mageddon’ by analysts, had wiped out about $1 trillion in market value, affecting sectors from software to logistics across the globe.

In a related development, the AI startup also announced a tool that could be used to modernize a legacy programming language, which resulted in a sharp drop for a major legacy technology company. Shares of that company, however, were up 3.5% on Tuesday amidst the broader rally. Other companies that announced separate partnerships with the AI startup also saw their shares rise.
