Warner Bros Discovery Sees Activist Sachem Head Increase Stake in Q4

A prominent activist investment fund significantly increased its stake in Warner Bros Discovery during the fourth quarter, a period when the media and entertainment giant agreed to sell its streaming and studios business to Netflix. This move was revealed in a regulatory filing made public on a Friday.

The hedge fund, which was one of last year’s top performers, more than doubled its holding in the company, ending the quarter with ownership of nearly 8 million shares. Warner Bros Discovery, a company valued at approximately $70 billion, subsequently became one of the fund’s ten largest U.S. stock investments by the end of the year.

This development comes at a particularly dynamic time for the media industry. Another media giant is also actively pursuing a deal with Warner Bros Discovery, having made a hostile bid that was rejected the previous month. Recently, this suitor increased the pressure, attempting to persuade Warner Bros Discovery to at least engage in discussions about its offer, suggesting it could become more attractive than the existing arrangement with Netflix.

As part of its strategy, the rival company hinted it might attempt to replace members of the Warner Bros Discovery board and even suggested the head of one of its major investors could be a suitable candidate for a director position.

The same regulatory filing from the activist fund also showed it placed new bets on other companies, including a telecommunications firm, an online used car retailer, and a live entertainment company. These quarterly filings, mandated for all large investment managers, offer a snapshot of their U.S. stock holdings. While they reflect past decisions, they are closely watched by investors for clues about which companies might be gaining favor or could be targets for future action.
