Christopher Romero, a 22-year-old resident of Vina del Mar, recounts the harrowing experience of losing his family home to the flames. While his family managed to evacuate safely, their two beloved dogs, Black and Kiara, disappeared into the chaos of the night.

Resilience Amidst the Rubble

Returning to their ravaged home on Sunday, Romero and his family embarked on a quest to find their missing pets. Their efforts led them to a revelation - an Akita named Black found in a ravine, battered and motionless. Overwhelmed with emotion, Romero shared, "He couldn't walk, he was scared, in shock, he didn't let anyone get close to him."

A Haven for Healing: Americas University Veterinary Clinic

Assistance arrived in the form of compassionate neighbors who aided in transporting the injured Black to the Americas University veterinary clinic in Vina del Mar. This facility emerged as a refuge for over 100 animals, including dogs, cats, and rabbits, injured in the wildfires.

Dedicated Veterinary Care

Under the guidance of Nicolas Escobar, the veterinary director, the clinic worked tirelessly to provide essential care. The animals received painkillers, injections, and meticulous attention to their burns and wounds. Some were even revived from critical conditions.

Unprecedented Challenges

While the clinic has previously assisted during wildfires, Escobar emphasized that the current disaster surpasses anything he has witnessed before. The scale of this tragedy is unprecedented, with many of the clinic's students facing the loss of their homes in the fires.

Reuniting Families: A Ray of Hope

Beyond medical care, the clinic undertook the task of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Utilizing social media platforms and microchip scans, they managed to bring a few pets back to their families. However, many, including Kiara, remain missing.
